An afternoon of dance firsts inspired by Opera Holland Park’s 2012 season

Season sponsored by Investec Wealth & Investment

English National Ballet and Opera Holland Park present an afternoon of new dance works by up-and-coming choreographers; each work inspired by Opera Holland Park’s 2012 season and performed to string quartet in the beautiful setting of Holland Park.

James Streeter, Junior Soloist from English National Ballet, has created a work for two male dancers inspired by the opera Yevgeny Onegin with a new score composed by Janine Forrester. The choreography explores the relationship of both Lensky and Onegin in a duel scene that captures the tension and the anticipation of the death of Lensky.

James Streeter commented:

“To be given this opportunity to create a piece for Opera Holland Park is a real honour. I feel very lucky to be involved in such a wonderful project, and am so thankful to have been given this chance. As a dancer it always feels so wonderful to perform in such beautiful places packed full of atmosphere and history, and to choreograph piece for such a venue is truly wonderful. Something I will never forget.

Mozart’s Così fan tutte provides the inspiration for Akademi’s Katie Ryan, who specialises in contemporary and odissi Indian classical dance. Naomi Deira from Union Dance presents a powerful piece influenced by Puccini, and Anne-Marie Smalldon from Combination Dance Company explores the themes of love, youth, innocence and the descent into madness from the opera Lucia di Lammermoor.

Arcadie Rusu is a contemporary choreographer, director and dancer based in Bucharest and is supported by the Romanian Cultural Institute for Dance Holland Park. His work for six dancers is inspired by Falstaff and set to new music by Alex Balanescu.

This is a rare opportunity to see five world premières by five diverse choreographers in a shared billing of ballet, contemporary and South Asian flavoured dance performances.
