Viktoria Mullova and Matthew Barley are two of the most respected and admired artists on the international stage. Having worked with the world’s top orchestras and conductors, violin virtuoso Viktoria Mullova has earned a reputation for her musical integrity and exceptional versatility. This versatility has perhaps been best demonstrated by her journeys into jazz and world music, often alongside her husband Matthew Barley. While Barley has performed concertos alongside first class orchestras such as the BBC Philharmonic, BBC Scottish Symphony, London Sinfonietta, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Czech Philharmonic and RLPO (amongst others), he has earned an unrivalled reputation for his adventurous programming and boundless imagination in projects that cross the divide between musical genres.
Mullova and Barley have joined their considerable forces to record an album that demonstrates all of these positive attributes on ONYX Classics: Peasant Girl, which will be released at the end of May 2011. The eclectic programme on the recording – which will also be performed at the 2011 Proms in London – reflects the influence of gypsy music on both classical and jazz in the 20th century.
On the disc, the genres of gypsy and jazz are represented alongside a Hungarian classic but the programme also makes a statement about Viktoria herself, says Matthew: “how she relates to the world, and more importantly to the music she loves and plays. She loves simplicity, and emotional directness and power, as well as virtuosity that comes from the heart and for the heart.” The pair hope that “this binding factor will prove more important than any definition of genre. Music is music.”
